Koprivshtitsa: A Journey Through Time

The town of Koprivshtitsa (Bulgaria) is washed by the waters of Topolnitsa and flanked by mountains of Sredna Gora. It is situated between the cities of Sofia and Plovdiv, just 100 km from both.
Everything about her exudes history and tells of a heroic past marked by the struggle for freedom against the Ottoman oppressors. Frozen in time, Koprivshtitsa is for many the paradigm of “Bulgarian National Revival.”
It experienced one of the most important events of the independence movement when the April 20, 1876 the insurgent people, led by Todor Kableshkov, rose against Turkish sovereignty.
The news quickly spread across the country attracting the libertarian sentiment in the rest of Bulgaria. Five days later, the Ottomans harshly quelled the revolt, killing about twelve thousand people. Since then this date is commemorated each year.
