Apokreis in Greece

Apokreis or Apokreas means “farewell to meat” and is the name of the Carnival in Greece. It is also an ancient tradition that is held here each year. In particular in Crete last three weeks, from Saturday February 13 and Saturday March 6.
The first week begins with the opening of the book Triodion, the three saints sacraments. The second week is the meat, it is common to see at that time the restaurants and taverns crowded. And the third week is the cheese, which is also known as ‘White Night’, because the meat was prohibited and there are still people who continue the tradition.
The last day of Carnival is called Tyrofagis and says that if you marry this day have an unhappy marriage, so do it later. So on March 7 is Monday for cleaning and is known as “Ash Monday”, marks the end of Apokreis and is the first day of Lent or Sarakosti. So the day is a holiday in Greece 7.
